AVIAN RADAR

Effective avian risk assessment at wind energy sites requires continuous, quantified data, not just snapshots.

Parula deploys compact, self-powered X-band radar systems that detect and classify biological targets around the clock. Data transmits via satellite for near real-time remote monitoring, and our proprietary analysis tools quantify flight direction, speed, height, and movement patterns throughout the monitoring period. As a general planning reference, one radar system can support the assessment of approximately 20 turbines.

Data products include movement maps, passage migration rate estimates, peak migration window identification, and evaluation of diurnal and nocturnal movement patterns, all tailored to your project's specific objectives and regulatory context.

The result is a defensible, project-specific dataset that supports permitting, informs curtailment planning, and gives you something to act on.

AVIAN ACOUSTICS

Radar tells you how animals are moving. Acoustics tells you who they are.

Parula Environmental deploys full-spectrum passive acoustic recorders to capture nocturnal flight calls, species composition, and bat activity across your project area. Recordings are processed using machine learning detection models combined with rigorous manual verification by experienced ornithologists, ensuring species identifications you can stand behind, including detections of species at risk.

Acoustic monitoring can be deployed independently or integrated with our radar program for a comprehensive picture of avian activity at your site.

BIOPHYSICAL SURVEYS

Avian radar and acoustics are our specialty, but our team's expertise doesn't stop there. Parula offers a full suite of biophysical survey services to support environmental assessment and permitting across Atlantic Canada. This includes rare plant & lichen surveys, wetland functional assessment, watercourse delineation, wildlife assessments for species-at-risk, and more.

Whether you need a single survey completed, or support across multiple disciplines, we bring the same field rigour and technical standards to every project that our individual clients have come to expect.
